The 3 things you SHOULD know about a Misfuel!

Motorboat Fuel Drains

If you find you have the incorrect fuel, or even contaminated fuel (most usually water contamination or old fuel) in a boat we can help you clean it out. Provided that the boat is either on land, or parked near enough to parking bay we will be able to reach the storage tanks and remove the contaminated fuel. We have carried out quite a few fuel drains at piers and boatyards nationwide.

Water Contamination or AdBlue Contamination

Fuel contaminated with water, whether it's petrol or diesel, is actually an important condition to handle in an automobile - specifically in modern common-rail engines.

Putting water or AdBlue in the diesel or petrol is likely to produce idling problems, irregular running, increased smoke and, if not dealt with effectively, quite possibly blown injectors. Having water in petrol is quicker to remove compared to water in diesel - this is primarily due to the fact that diesel is an oil. Nevertheless we are able to deal with both circumstances quite simply.

Keep in mind that if the vehicle was run on the water contaminated fuel it will very likely require a new fuel filter fitted because the old one will likely be thoroughly wet and useless.

Wrong Fuel in Car London - Petrol in Diesel Car Southwick

I am not actually that hot for carrying out work on Sundays, and a while back was the same. I'd just left home after a lovely dinner made by the better half, and I was off to assist a man who had put the wrong fuel in his wife's Saab. He was stationed in Southwick hence I arrived with him almost immediately. Just as I drove up behind the vehicle and got out he said to me "Thank the Lord! I foolishly had my concentration on something else and failed to perceive I had put diesel in my petrol vehicle. Have I created any kind of harm through starting it?" I determined that there shouldn't be any damage and also that I'd personally remove the contaminated fuel at once. It goes without saying that I drained the fuel from the vehicle and put in the appropriate fuel, and so one more satisfied client was able to continue their journey without the need for difficulty. The gentleman did not stop thanking me, and that can make carrying out work on weekends in West Sussex a tiny bit better to me!

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VAT receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
